Frequently asked questions

Is Acupuncture right for me? Many people use acupuncture for specific health concerns or as a treatment to strengthen their immunity and maintain health and well-being. Acupuncture is suitable for all ages including young children and the elderly. Acupuncture can be very effective when used alongside conventional medicine. Acupuncture can help with a wide array of health conditions.

What does Acupuncture feel like? Many people describe a sensation of tingling or sometimes a dull ache that is short in duration. others have said they can feel the sensation along the meridian pathway, some don't feel anything at all. almost all patients find the treatment very relaxing and will often drift off to sleep aiding the body to heal.

How many sessions will I need? That depends on your individual condition. Generally chronic illness takes longer to treat than acute conditions. Your age and general constitution will determine how soon symptoms may resolve. initially I advise to book one to two treatments weekly. You may start to feel the benefits following your second treatment. Once your health has stabilized treatments will reduce to once every other week followed by monthly intervals. Many people choose to continue monthly treatments as a preventative healthcare measure.

Are there any side effects? Acupuncture is considered a very safe procedure if performed by a professionally trained practitioner who follows best practice and adheres to strict infection control policies. The Acupuncture Regularity Authority hold a list of professional members, this is assessable to all patients. Sometimes there may be slight bruising or swelling in the area that has been treated but this should resolve in a few days.

Should I continue taking prescribed medication whilst receiving acupuncture? Yes! please continue to take your prescribed medication as directed by your GP or healthcare practitioner. Acupuncture may assist you with reducing your dosage or even stop taking certain medications but this must always be discussed and agreed with your GP.

I'm scared of needles - can I have acupuncture? The needles used during your acupuncture treatment are hair-fine, unlike conventional needles used for blood tests. our needles are not hollow and many people do not feel them upon insertion. You can be assured that I will answer any further questions you may have. The treatment space is calming and I will do all I can to put you at ease.

What should I do before treatment? It is recommended that you eat a small meal before your treatment (within two hours) please avoid anything too heavy as this can make it uncomfortable for you as you may receive treatment laying on your stomach. This will also alter the pattern felt on your pulse due to digestion taking place. Do avoid alcohol or food and drink that can alter the coating on the tongue such as tea and coffee. Wear loose comfortable clothing to enable easy access to points on the body. You can usually remain fully clothed. if you do need to remove certain garments you will be offered privacy and the use of towels/robes for your dignity.

How will I feel after my treatment? You may feel very relaxed and calm. People often say they want to sleep. rarely people can feel lightheaded or drowsy due to the fall in BP. You will be offered a glass of water and advised to remain within the clinic until this subsides, If you are prone to feeling lightheaded please do not drive and arrange a lift to and from your treatment.

Should I inform my GP I am having acupuncture? If you are currently receiving ongoing medical care from your GP it is advisable to discuss the suitability for acupuncture alongside this. Please do inform me of any medical care you are receiving including prescribed medication and any changes to your dosage as this may affect your response to the acupuncture treatment.

Can I claim back my treatment costs through my private medical insurance? Yes! depending on the insurance provider, many insurance companies accept insurance claims from acupuncturists who are members of recognized professional accreditation bodies such as the British Acupuncture Federation and the Acupuncture Regularity Authority. Please check your individual policy details.
